A Holistic Approach to BrownfieldsThe Ohio Department of Development has created a new brownfield redevelopment program that uses a holistic approach designed to help communities clean up numerous vacant, contaminated sites more quickly. This pilot program - the Brownfield Action Plan Program - embodies an area-wide approach in planning for cleaning and reusing such sites with the idea that they are all connected, either along corridors or throughout neighborhoods. The approach is designed to be more efficient, faster and promote a more comprehensive revitalization of Ohio's communities. http://development.ohio.gov/Urban/BrownfieldAWP.htm Initiated by ODD's Office of Redevelopment, the program will connect redevelopment with a community's housing, transportation and infrastructure goals. The program will provide both technical assistance and seed money to implement recommendations. This will allow communities to leverage and prioritize local, state and federal funds to get the biggest economic input. The program is modeled on the U.S. EPA's Area-Wide Planning Pilot Program launched in the spring of 2010. |
